Nitrous Oxide Sedation

One of the longest used and gentlest sedative methods available, nitrous oxide sedation is still the most effective option. Sometimes referred to as “laughing gas,” this sedative probably won’t make everything funny, but it usually makes the patient feel lighter, more content, and more relaxed for necessary work we perform. It is mild enough to use on basically anyone, including the elderly and most others, and it is fast acting, which means that within a minute or so, you’ll start to feel its effects and feel less stress about your dental visit.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is ideal for patients with mild dental phobia or anxiety, those who have difficulty numbing with local anesthesia alone, and those who have sensitive teeth, gums, or gag reflexes. In each of these cases, the sedative puts their mind at ease as well as physically relaxes the patient so that we can perform the endodontic procedure comfortably. Again, because nitrous oxide is so gentle, most people can receive this sedation without worrying about negative side effects.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Unlike other forms of dental sedation, nitrous oxide isn’t delivered through an IV or taken as a pill. Inhaled through a nasal mask during treatment, this sedative takes effect almost immediately. Throughout the appointment, the dosage is controlled by our team, allowing us to increase or decrease as necessary and ensuring optimal comfort. Because nitrous oxide does not put the patient to sleep, they are still able to know what’s going on around them and respond to us. Once we’ve finished the patient’s care, we simply remove the mask.
Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide

Perhaps best of all, the nitrous oxide sedative does not last long in the body after the mask has been taken away. Its effects wear off quickly, which allows patients to return to their daily routines right away. In fact, there’s no need to have a friend or family member drive patients to and from the dental office or monitor them afterward for residual effects. For many patients, nitrous oxide is the perfect solution for taking the edge and discomfort out of dental appointments.
Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, you’ll be prescribed medication to take at home that should help ease your anxiety. It should be in full effect by the time you reach our office, and depending on how you feel, we might have you take more before we begin your procedure. In the chair, you’ll remain awake, but time will seemingly flow by quickly, meaning you’ll be done before you know it. Because OCS starts at home and can linger for several hours afterward, be sure to have a trusted person drive you to and from our office!
IV Sedation

For patients with high-level dental anxiety, or those who need to have several teeth treated in a single appointment, IV sedation can allow them to remain calm and comfortable throughout the entire process. We work with a medical anesthesiologist for this process to ensure your full comfort and safety. The medication is administered directly into the bloodstream, making the patient extremely relaxed in less than a minute. The level of sedation can be adjusted throughout the appointment so that a patient is perfectly content from moment to moment.
