For some patients, being told you need a root canal can be a stressful experience, especially if you’ve heard some of the following misconceptions about this extremely beneficial treatment. Don’t let misinformation prevent you from getting the care you need. Here’s the truth about five common (untrue) myths about root canals!

Myth #1: Root Canals are Painful

While in many cases your tooth may already be in pain when you need a root canal, the procedure itself always begins with your dentist numbing your mouth. Thus, you won’t feel anything during treatment. You may experience some soreness during recovery; however, most patients find that it is much more manageable than the tooth infection its repairing.

Myth #2: Root Canals Cause Illness

A recent documentary film shook up the dental world when the filmmaker made claims that his root canal gave him cancer. While studies have since found this claim to be false and root canals to be completely safe, this rumor has proliferated online and has caused quite a bit of confusion. The great news is that no, root canals do not cause cancer or any other illnesses.

Myth #3 Extraction is a Comparable Alternative to a Root Canal

While in some cases, your tooth may need to be extracted, the truth is, if you can get a root canal instead of a removal, this is always preferred. This is because it is better for your oral and overall health to keep as many of your natural teeth as possible. By undergoing a root canal procedure, you can keep your real teeth for a lifetime!

Myth #4 Root Canals are Temporary

If you’ve heard that root canals are only a temporary solution or a quick fix, the good news is that you’ve heard wrong. Root canals are a permanent treatment, meaning they completely clear up your tooth infection and provide lasting protection that keeps your teeth safe for a lifetime. In some rare cases, patients may need to have their root canal redone if some of the infection is missed, however this is rare and typically the second attempt is successful. While your dentist does their best to ensure that all the infected pulp is removed, because the root canals in your teeth are so small, they can be very easy to miss.

Myth #5 Root Canals are Only Necessary if You’re in Pain

While it’s true that root canals are an excellent solution to relieve the discomfort of a tooth infection, you do not need to be in pain to need a root canal. In some cases, the tooth may be so damaged that there is no longer any sensation present. Thus, while it may feel completely fine, the infection could be in danger of spreading to other teeth and throughout the rest of your body.

Remember, while there is plenty of misinformation out there about root canals, the good news is that these treatments are extremely safe, effective, and provide a long-lasting solution that will allow you to keep your natural teeth without the need for extraction and replacement.
